What is Cholesterol?Cholesterol is a sterol (a combination steroid and alcohol). Cholesterol is a lipid found in the cell membranes of all tissues, and it is transported in the blood plasma of all animals. Because cholesterol is synthesized by all eukaryotes, trace amounts of cholesterol are also found in membranes of plants and fungi. The name originates from the Greek chole- (bile) and stereos (solid), and the chemical suffix -ol for an alcohol, as researchers first identified cholesterol in solid form in gallstones by Francois Poulletier de la Salle in 1769. However, it is only in 1815 that chemist Eugene Chevreul named the compound "cholesterine".[2]Most of the cholesterol is synthesized by the body and some has dietary origin. Cholesterol is more abundant in tissues which either synthesize more or have more abundant densely-packed membranes, for example, the liver, spinal cord and brain. It plays a central role in many biochemical processes, such as the composition of cell membranes and the synthesis of steroid hormones. Cholesterol is insoluble in blood, but is transported in the circulatory system bound to one of the varieties of lipoprotein, spherical particles which have an exterior composed mainly of water-soluble proteins. The main types, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) carry cholesterol from and to the liver.According to the lipid hypothesis, abnormally high cholesterol levels (hypercholesterolemia) and abnormal proportions of LDL and HDL are associated with cardiovascular disease by promoting atheroma development in arteries (atherosclerosis). This disease process leads to myocardial infarction (heart attack), stroke and peripheral vascular disease. As high LDL contributes to this process, it is termed "bad cholesterol", while high levels of HDL ("good cholesterol") offer a degree of protection. The balance can be redressed with exercise, a healthy diet, and sometimes medication. |

Diagnostic Tests â” Arterial Blood Flow Studies of the Legs People who have leg pain when exercising may need an evaluation to make sure they have normal blood flow through their leg arteries. Normally blood pressure Tilted and non-tilted postischaemic exercise peak blood flow in The leg blood flow capacity was estimated as the peak flow in . filling prior to the test. Thus the arteriovenous. pressure difference had not changed Blood flow studies How the test will feel:. For the plethysmography, the blood pressure cuff will constrict the arm or leg, but there is no pain. The gel used for the duplex Vascular Workup (Non-Invasive) In this test, blood pressure cuffs are applied to the legs at different levels and the machine the better the blood flow is that that part of the leg. Lower leg subcutaneous blood flow during walking and passive Wilcoxon matched-pairs test). The relative blood-flow rate .. of digital blood pressure in leg ulcer patients. Acta Derm Venereol Lower Extremity Atherosclerosis To confirm the diagnosis, your doctor may perform a test called a Doppler study to check the blood flow in your legs. Blood pressure cuffs are placed at Circulation - Fulltext: Volume 115(24) June 19, 2007 p e624-e626 Multiple blood pressure cuffs are placed on each leg. The sonographer will inflate the cuffs in sequence to measure the blood pressure and blood flow at Blood flow studies - DrKoop.com How the test will feel:. During the plethysmography, the blood pressure cuff will constrict the arm or leg, but there is no pain. BIOMEDICAL RESULTS FROM SKYLAB - Hemodynamic Studies of the Legs Under one-g, an increase in muscle blood flow is seen in elevation of the legs while pressure testing and it will be seen again in several experiments. Blood Flow Study Suggests Other Causes For Exercise Intolerance A new study shows that blood flow to the legs is relatively normal in people before and after flow was temporarily stopped with a blood pressure cuff. |
